What Do Artists Get Up To Every Day?
Welcome to my weekly blog, where I’ll keep you updated on my artistic journey and answer that burning question: What do artists actually get up to every day.
As a professional artist, juggling two young boys and running a bustling art school, life is always full of surprises. There's never a dull moment, and I'm excited to share these experiences with you.
Last week was particularly exciting as I’ve finally moved into my new home studio, all thanks to my incredibly handy husband, who can build just about anything. I’m lucky, I know! Having this peaceful space close to the family is truly wonderful, especially since my main studio has become so busy with art classes and events that it’s hard to concentrate there.
Dawn Crothers Home Studio, Belfast
This week, I completed two commissions—one in a familiar realm and the other, a bit more unexpected. But that's what keeps things interesting!
The first was a portrait of a beautiful dog, I actually had the pleasure of meeting him when he visited me in the studio, but I can’t reveal it as its a private commission. If you're ever considering a dog portrait commission, it's always a great idea to bring your furry friend along! It helps me capture their unique personality and spirit. I also offer lovely gift vouchers, which include a gallery visit where we can meet, discuss your commission, and make it a truly personal experience. It’s the perfect paw-some Christmas gift.
The second commission was a dynamic scene featuring the Irish Guards march, with Seamus, the stunning Irish Wolfhound, proudly leading the soldiers. Funny enough, I just realized both of my commissions this week feature dogs—perhaps a nod to my love for animals!

I truly enjoyed working on both pieces, especially with the vibrant colours that brought the scene of the Irish march to life. If you're looking for a unique and personal gift this holiday season, keep me in mind for that perfect pet portrait.
Chanel Paint and Sip at Snail Art Studios
On Thursday evening at The Snail Art Studio, I had the absolute pleasure of hosting a Chanel-themed Paint and Sip class. It was such a blast with the loveliest group of ladies! The energy was incredible, and we had a lot of fun creating our Andy Warhol-inspired pieces. The great thing about this class is that the artwork always turns out amazing!
We’re planning to launch another session sometime in the new year, so stay tuned— I’ll keep you posted!
A Sneak Peek at My Children's Picture Book
One project that is especially close to my heart is the creation of my children's picture book. It's been a long time in the making—over three years, in fact. Throughout this journey, I’ve been quietly collecting images and working on something that will truly inspire children to explore their own artistic creativity.
That’s just a little hint for you! Next week, I’ll be revealing more about this exciting project. Chat soon, Dawn 🐌
